During fifth grade, students transition toward the role of middle school student. Spiritually, they continue to mentor younger students through our Chapel Buddies program. They are blessed with the continued opportunity to use Christ as an example of compassion and forgiveness in their interpersonal relationships.
Academically, fifth graders grow in their ability to take notes and prepare for tests. They complete and take home planners each night to help communicate with parents regarding their activities and responsibilities. Students independently monitor their progress on specific tasks such as reading packet completion. They also are allowed to make test corrections in an effort to improve their grade as well as impart a desire to complete their learning cycle by finding where their error occurred.
Our subject matter includes a thorough exploration of the Old Testament, studing US history from the crossing of the Bering Strait to the Louisiana Purchase, enjoying a ½ hour each day to read independently and complete
Accelerated Reading with a curriculum based entirely on novels. We also learn more about God’s intricate creation as we study Earth & Life Science.
Additional highlights of fifth grade are the Pigskin Geography competition with the third graders, enjoying the Fort Wayne Philharmonic at the Embassy Theatre, and spending a few days together at Camp Lutherhaven for Outdoor Education.
